Are there one or more serial killers on the loose in NSW?

There are calls for a fresh probe into dozens of cold case murders along the NSW North Coast with a theory one or more serial killers could be behind the violent crimes.

An investigation by the Daily Telegraph revealed a list of more than 60 women who were found dead or vanished in the area between 1997 and 2009, with investigators still at a loss as to what happened to them.

Criminologist Dr Xanthe Mallett said the University of Newcastle is also looking into the cases and told Today Extra there are signs one or more people could be responsible for them.

"We are looking at the patterns of those disappearances, the victim type and also the modus operandi and the type of offender, so certainly there is the potential for at least one or two serial killers to be working that stretch of highway between Newcastle and the Byron area," she said.

"Thirty years is a long time and some of these cases have not had the full investigation that could perhaps have been applied to them, obviously, forensic and investigative techniques develop, so this is really an opportunity to see whether there are genuinely any links between them, because decades have passed for some of them, but they are still potentially solvable."

NSW MP Jeremy Buckingham will receive a briefing from police today and Mallettt said it could see more of the cold cases linked.

"Cold cases remain open until they're solved, but that doesn't mean that they're necessarily reviewed regularly, so certainly this is an opportunity," she said.

"Thirty years ago, we didn't know as much about serial offenders as we do today, so I think we really need to look very in-depth at these cases, because I'm absolutely sure some of them are linked from the work that we've done at Newcastle University already and we'd be very happy to assist NSW Police if they were open to that."

Today reached out to NSW Police for comment on the matter and a spokesperson provided the following statement: "Over the years a number of investigations looked into the disappearance of women on the state's North Coast, to this date, there is no evidence to indicate a common offender was responsible for the disappearances and the matters remain under investigation."
