New Zealand entertainer Cal Wilson has died after a brief illness.

The 53-year-old's agency confirmed the sad news in a statement this morning, saying the comedian, writer and actor passed away at Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital a short time ago.

"Our heart is with her family and friends and the comedy community that surrounded her, it's a big, big loss and shock as well."

Wilson was from Christchurch, but moved to Melbourne in 2003 to star in the well-known sketch show Skithouse.

Other notable works include featuring on Spicks and Specks, Good News Week, Would I Lie To You and 14 appearances at the Melbourne Comedy Festival of which she was a member of its board.
