'Like a horror movie': Plane drops mid-flight in British Airways turbulence scare

A young British family said they were certain their plane was going to plummet into the ocean after the aircraft went through extreme turbulence mid-flight.

Jade Crosland and Henry Trier were on the British Airways flight from Singapore to Heathrow with their two young children when the seatbelt sign came on while flight staff were in the middle of the meal trolley service.

"Then within seconds of the seatbelt sign coming on, the plane just dropped heavily," Henry told Today.

"Everything started shaking and then out of nowhere there was another freefall drop that last about 10 seconds - the only way to describe it is like being on a rollercoaster when you start that fall."

The couple said people were screaming and the meal trolleys were thrown into the air with food going everywhere.

"One of the trolleys lifted into a cabin crew member's head and he was out cold on the floor," Jade said.

"It was like a horror movie."

Henry said there were four cabin crew who suffered injuries including being knocked unconscious and broken bones.

Jade said after the first drop, she rushed to check on the children who were asleep in the seats in front of them.

"I strapped my daughter Harper back on me and then there was another drop and at that point I just thought we are about to go into the sea," she said.

"They're going to say brace and we are going to nosedive into the ocean and die."

As a safety precaution and due to the injured flight staff, the flight turned around and returned to Singapore.
