'I don't really': Why Boy George prefers the classics over new music

Boy George is one of those iconic voices of the '80s, whose solo music and songs with Culture Club have stood the test of time.

But while his hits are as popular with today's audience as they are with fans of all ages, don't ask the Karma Chameleon singer which "modern" artists he has playing in his car.

"I always think of myself as more of a '70s kid because that's when I really discovered music," he told Today.

"But people always ask me, 'What do you listen to that's new?' and I always think, I don't really - I always go back and listen to things that are classics, it's like buying good furniture."

And that love of the classics is what's bringing Boy George back to Aussie shores in the new year, as part of the Timeless Summer Tour.

He will join Bonnie Tyler, Spandau Ballet's Tony Hadley and Starship for shows in Victoria, NSW and Queensland in January and he said all the big hits will be performed.

"The show is a real mix of everything, you know, lots of obviously hits and covers, but I like to do a few surprise things too," he said.

"Obviously I won't be covering any Bonnie songs because that will annoy her," he laughed.

It's unclear if Madonna's Like a Prayer will be one of those surprises, but Today hosts, Karl and Sarah couldn't help but burst out in song in front of their special guest.

"I haven't worn the Madonna bra, but if I get my hands on one, I will absolutely go there because I love that song," Sarah said.

And Boy George said he was cool with that, as long as she or Karl wear it to one of the Timeless Summer shows.

"Please come in your Madonna outfit, Sarah you come as Madonna and Karl, you can dress as Adam Ant," he said.

"I can't wait to see your outfits."
