Federal police officer 'lucky' he wasn't blinded in stabbing attack

The Australian Federal Police said an arresting officer is lucky he wasn't blinded after an unruly passenger escorted off a plane allegedly stabbed him in the face.

Officers were waiting at the airport after the 34-year-old woman allegedly became disruptive onboard a Jetstar flight from Sydney to Perth on Monday night.

The woman was taken into custody on arrival and when she allegedly tried to run from arresting officers on the tarmac, police claim she pulled a pen from her pocket and stabbed one officer in the forearm and another in the face and neck.

"We really have a zero tolerance to this type of behaviour by passengers," AFP Acting Superintendent Peter Brindal told Today.

"And although we accept a level of risk as police officers protecting the community at the airport, our members aren't punching bags."

The terrifying attack is the third incident in a fortnight where federal police have had to attend to disruptive passengers on planes and Brindal said this could have turned out a lot worse for the injured officers.

"The allegation is that she's stabbed at the first officer, causing injuries to his forearms and the second officer has gone to assist," he said.

"And unfortunately, again, the allegation is that she's used the same pen and she's stabbed the second officer to the neck and to the face, just under the eye. A really serious injury, so he was very, very lucky because of the proximity to his eye."
