Alex Cullen has been left with meat sweats after attempting to eat more than five kilograms of beef burger in under 30 minutes.

After Karl Stefanovic failed his own challenge to down 12 cheeseburgers following Alex's beloved Parramatta Eels win over the Penrith Panthers two weeks ago, his co-host reluctantly put his hand up to try the Khartoum Hotel Ultimate Burger Challenge.

"Look at the size of it - it's bigger than my head," Alex said.

"That is one big mother," co-host Brooke Boney added.

Patrons of the Khartoum Hotel, in the NSW Hunter Valley, have just 30 minutes to finish the giant burger and can win an impressive $900 if they do.

The current record is 11 minutes and if anyone can beat that they get an additional $500 on top of the original prize money.

"Come on Alex, he needs it for the kids' education," Karl joked.

"Of course he may not be around to see it."

Hotel visitors have tried different methods to complete the challenge and Alex chose to cut his burger like a cake.

Unfortunately that didn't help, with Alex failing to even get through half the burger before the 30 minute deadline.

"I'm getting the meat sweats," he said.

"I'm not well, I'm not well at all."
