The world will celebrate Back to the Future Day on October 21 - the day in 2015 which Marty McFly first travelled to in the film's iconic DeLorean time machine.

And coincidentally, this month a Wisconsin family found one in their barn, covered in dust, with all the parts still attached and less than 1500km on the odometer.

Perhaps Doc and Marty took a detour that didn't make it in the hit Steven Spielberg film series, but the find got the Today hosts pondering what time they would travel to if they had the opportunity.

Alex's reason behind his time travel destination left his co-hosts dumbfounded.  Today

Brooke said she'd be keen to go back and see if the moon landing was actually real, or somewhere in the future.

But Alex's answer left his co-hosts dumbfounded.

"Umm, dinosaurs - just to see if it's all real," the sport presenter said.

"How real were those T-Rex and what we know about them."

His answer got laughs out of everyone and Brooke assured Alex the dinosaurs "were most definitely not a myth", while Sarah suggested he visit a museum to see all the skeletons on display.

On August 12, 1990, a fossil hunter stumbled across three huge bones sticking out of a cliff near South Dakota in the US. Susan Hendrickson didn't know it then but she had stumbled across the remains of the largest-ever Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton ever discovered.

Did the T-Rex really exist? Alex wants to find out. Supplied

"You don't really believe it do you? Alex thinks the dinosaurs are a conspiracy!" Karl laughed.

"Ooh we've got a skeptic," Sarah added.

Realising what he'd unleashed with his co-hosts, Alex quickly tried to backtrack on his answer.

"I'm not saying that at all, just did they really look like that, that's all I'm saying," he clarified.

"Dinosaurs are real, okay."
