Tip fire in Melbourne puts 17 suburbs on alert

A large fire which broke out in a tip in Melbourne's west has put 17 suburbs on high alert this morning.

More than 40 firefighters were called out to the fight the blaze at Brooklyn, which has now been brought under control.

9News reporter Reid Butler said firefighters had been struggling to access water and, with hot weather expected today, there was a risk of spot fires.

Monday morning traffic in the area has been affected, with Old Geelong Road closed.

Smoke is also blowing to the south impacting many suburbs around Altona North.

Authorities have warned residents to close their windows and turn off cooling systems in Altona, Altona Meadows, Altona North, Brooklyn, Laverton North, Seaholme, Williamstown, Williamstown North, Altona Gate, Laverton, Altona East, Seabrook, Newport, South Kingsville, Tottenham, Point Cook and Sunshine West.
