Two children in stable condition after car crash which killed three family members

Two children remain in a stable condition in hospital after being cut from the wreckage of a horror car crash in Victoria’s west which killed their parents and infant sister.

The eight-year-old boy and three-year-old girl were airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne yesterday.

The boy suffered serious head, abdominal and pelvic injuries in the smash but had his condition downgraded from critical late yesterday.

The car the family was travelling in slammed into a gum tree near Lake Mundi, on the Casterton-Penola Road near the Victoria-South Australia border about 7.30am yesterday.

The boy reportedly arrived at hospital still clutching a teddy bear, while yesterday was the three-year-old girl’s birthday.

The 39-year-old male driver was trapped in the wreckage for two hours before dying in hospital yesterday afternoon.

His 29-year-old wife and their baby died at the scene.

News Corp reports the family were six hours into their drive home from Melbourne airport when the car collided with the tree.

The family is believed to have lived in Mount Gambier, just over the South Australian border, for several years.

Victoria Police said they suspect the driver missed a turnoff and are investigating if fatigue was a factor in the crash.
