Three in custody, one dead after cop chase

A man has handed himself in after allegedly running away from the scene of a fatal car accident during a police chase northwest of Melbourne.

Police were called to an alleged attempted theft at Macedon railway station, about 70 kilometres from Melbourne, just before 5am (AEST) on Saturday, a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

Four people took off in a car and police gave chase but a short time later, officers found the car had rolled on a nearby bend.

One man was killed while two others ran from the scene.

A 27-year-old Sunbury woman was arrested at the scene and is under police guard at Royal Melbourne Hospital.

A Sunbury man, 30, was arrested on a roadside at nearby Gisborne about 9.45am.

He had minor injuries and remains in police custody.

But police were still looking for the second man until Saturday evening, when a 32-year-old from Diggers Rest showed up at Gisborne Police Station.

He's being held for questioning.

Professional Standards Command officers are overseeing the investigation.

Elsewhere in Victoria, police are pleading with motorists to go slow in the wet and windy weekend conditions, after three people were killed trying to clear a tree that had fallen in high winds.

The Seven Network reports a group of farmers on their way home from work on Friday night spotted the tree lying across a road at Broadwater, near Port Fairy, and tried to clear a path.

But a car ploughed into the group, killing two farmhands.

A man in the car's front passenger seat also died at the scene.

"Three people, in very treacherous circumstances, some people trying to do the right thing in terms of removing a danger to the roadway," Assistant Commissioner Jack Blayney told reporters.

"All I can do is re-emphasise with the community: at this time of year - slippery roads, treacherous conditions, please slow down and take care."

A third farmer on the road and four children in the back seat of the car escaped injury.

The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The deaths take Victoria's road toll to 124, 11 more than at the same time in 2013.
