Thousands of WA school students have been caught up in a cyber safety scam via Instagram

Thousands of WA school students have been caught up in a cyber-safety probe via Instagram after being approached online for nude photographs.

It’s understood the person behind the requests has approached kids at nine different schools, claiming to be a 16-year-old boy called ‘Max Williams’.

Up to 2000 children have been targeted.

9NEWS understands the person may be behind up to three different Instagram accounts that authorities know about, two of which have been taken down.

WA Police are investigating, along with the E Safety Commissioner. One school has sent an email home to parents warning of the danger.

It is not known if any of the students shared images with the account.
