Thousands of Sydneysiders converge on Martin Place to leave tributes to siege victims

Thousands have flocked to Martin Place in an ongoing pilgrimage to pay their respects to the victims of the tragic Sydney siege.

Mourners have laid down a sea of flowers that continues to grow, with messages of unity and farewells to the two people killed by gunman Man Monis in the 16-hour hostage situation at the Lindt chocolate cafe.

Bands have also offered musical tributes at the site, and pictures of the huge field of flowers have been shared around the world on social media.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove have laid flowers at the site, along with NSW Premier Mike Baird and NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione.

Among the tributes were a number of touching messages, including one to heroic cafe manager Tori Johnson.

Johnson reportedly died trying to wrestle Monis' shotgun away in the final stage of the siege.

"Tori, you have been the kindest manager I've ever had. Rest in Paradise," the note, signed by "Karen V", reads.

TODAY Show host Lisa Wilkinson has also called for the notes left at Martin Place to be preserved and published in bound collections for grieving families.
