A woman was sexually assaulted in Melbourne last night, just one week after two other women were attacked in the same area.

Victoria Police confirmed a woman was assaulted in Hope Street, Brunswick at 8pm, only blocks from where Jill Meagher was brutally raped and murdered in 2012, The Age reported.

It is believed the latest attack is not connected to last week's attacks on two women as they left Sydney Road bars.

On Saturday, the two victims, both aged 22, reported being grabbed from behind in a bear hug or head lock before being dragged into side streets and assaulted.

The first woman had left a hotel about 1.15am when she was pulled into Stewart Street.

She fled and managed to flag down a friend in a passing cab.

Just over an hour later, the same man is believed to have attacked the second woman in nearby Charles Street, wrestling her to the ground.

She too escaped and managed to outrun her attacker.

The man is described as 180cm tall with a thin build and fair complexion.

He was wearing blue jeans and a dark-coloured hoodie.

Anyone with  information is asked to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
