A third Australian has reportedly been killed fighting for an extremist group in Syria.

A man from Sydney's southwest has died in the ongoing conflict, Fairfax News has reported.

It is believed two other Australians, ISIL recruiter Mohammad Ali Baryalei and Abu Noor al-Kurdi, have previously been killed in Iraq and Syria.

The third man is from a well-known family in Sydney, community sources have said.

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said the government is still trying to verify the reports of all three deaths.

However, the spokesperson said the government's ability to follow up on reports of the deaths was "limited" due to the volatile situation in the region.

It is believed up to 60 Australians are fighting for extremist groups in Iraq and Syria.

The government has already cancelled a number of passports, barring suspected militants from returning to Australia.
