Thieves have broken into the Yarloop fire station and stolen equipment donated to the bushfire devastated community south of Perth.

Shire of Harvey chief bushfire control officer Phil Penny says police are investigating after tools, a fridge and fire equipment were stolen on Wednesday night.

"It's really disheartening that somebody would do this for their own gain," Mr Penny told 6PR radio on Friday.

"It's hurt me. There's a lot of us that have done so much hard work over the last six months to try and get everybody back on their feet."

January's devastating lightning-sparked bushfire at Yarloop killed two elderly men and destroyed 166 homes.
