Easter eggs: the weird and wonderful things hidden in the budget

From savings found in a chocolate factory to a commemorative flagpole for a NSW town, the Federal Budget was full of the weird and wonderful.

In the massive series of documents - if the Budget papers were printed on a standard printer it would take around 98 hours - there was plenty of room for spending on areas other than the core platforms of families, small business, national security and health.

A decision by chocolate giant Cadbury not to expand its factory in Claremont, Tasmania, will see $16m returned to the Budget over the next three years.

The savings from this measure will be redirected to fund “other priorities” in Tasmania.

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the nation’s first European inland settlement, $250,000 will go to a flagstaff at the site where Governor Lachlan Macquarie proclaimed the future town of Bathurst.

More than $100m will be spend over forward estimates on improving Northern Territory roads - not for the people, but for the cattle.

“This funding will seek to improve the productivity and resilience of cattle supply chains in northern Australia,” the Budget papers read.

And the Government will make a $1m saving by terminating the ‘Seatbelts on Regional School Buses’ program. An early uptake by bus operators means the Goverment’s work is done.
