This is the moment a luxury car exploded into flames

It looks more like footage from a war zone – huge, bright explosions shoot into the sky as flames repeatedly spew from a parked, burning car.

But it was on a quiet suburban street in Sydney's west where a luxury BMW car was destroyed overnight, the fiery spectacle witnessed by several neighbours and captured on camera.

“It was just like boom, then boom again,” Nin Yako told 9NEWS.

“It was scary because the flames kept getting higher, and I thought something else was going to catch on fire.”

Loud bangs can be repeatedly heard in the footage of the car as it sits on a Bossley Park road engulfed by an inferno.

Witness John Milicac was on his way home around 2am when he first saw the smoke.

“The explosion was huge,” he told 9NEWS.

“The smoke, as I was getting closer, started sparkling and then it was big, flashing, sparkling lights.”

The sheer noise and force of the flames woke several neighbours – including the car’s sleeping owner, who had parked the vehicle there earlier in the night.

Police are investigating the incident.
