The Chaser star jokes about flight MH370

Star of ABC show The Chaser Julian Morrow claims staff from the Kyle and Jackie O show invited him on to make his on-air jokes about missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

Morrow made a number of jokes about conspiracy theories surrounding the missing flight during the show - provoking a "too soon" response from host Sandilands and Jackie O. 

The pair said they were hoping for an "intelligent discussion" and were left speechless and "unprepared" when Morrow began making jokes.

But in a statement released on Twitter Morrow says he had asked by text "to clarify that, 'the angle is to invent silly/funny conspiracy theories for what happened'."

"That was confirmed," he wrote. "But it's now obvious this is where a misunderstanding crystallised."

"I'd be a hypocrite not to take responsibility for jokes I wrote and delivered knowingly, and I'm happy to do that. Unfortunately, jokes are all about context, and today a regrettable misunderstanding meant the context was all wrong."

During the segment Morrow blamed numerous ludicrous parties for being responsible for the missing flight including a resurgence of the Lara Bingle 'Where the Bloody Hell Are You' campaign, Coles, and the makers of Air Crash Investigation. 

The usually unflappable Sandilands responded with: "Hang on, so this is a joke segment? I had all my serious facts here. I didn’t have any jokes written down; I thought it's way too soon. We don't even know where this plane is."

Eventually Jackie O stepped in to apologise, telling Morrow that he must have got the "wrong brief about the segment".

The pair took the unusual step of calling their executive producer into the studio to explain why Morrow had the wrong brief on air.

"We thought by funny he (Morrow) meant he was going to take his, not take it that way," said EP Simon Greally.

Even Sandilands, who is known for his controversial comments, stepped away from the microphone: "I'm going on the roof for a ciggie (sic). I've been involved in enough s--t over the years. I don't need to start at a new joint."

"But maybe it's a bit soon, but that's what The Chaser do."
