The Bronwyn Bishop chopper saga

COPTER CONTROVERSY:

* Speaker Bronwyn Bishop not only chairs the lower house; she performs a role similar to a minister in overseeing the Department of the House of Representatives.

* Mrs Bishop is a popular guest speaker at Liberal Party functions.

* She chartered an Air Melbourne helicopter from Melbourne to the Clifton Springs Golf Club on November 5, 2014, during the first week of the Victorian election campaign, for a function with Liberal candidate Ron Nelson.

* The Speaker claimed $5227.27 for the 100km flight, despite there being cheaper options such as a commonwealth car.

* Such claims need to relate to "official purposes", and there is doubt if political fundraisers qualify.

* The Speaker signed a section of the Presiding Officer Charter Certification Form that states: "I understand that knowingly giving false or misleading information is a serious offence under the Criminal Code Act 1995. I certify that I travelled on the charter and that it was provided for official purposes."

* The Speaker offered to repay the charter cost, with a 25 per cent loading, but insists the travel was for "official purposes".

* The Criminal Code Act 1995 states giving "false or misleading information" is an offence punishable by 12 months in jail.

* The constitution states an MP can no longer sit in the parliament if they have been sentenced to a jail term of 12 months or longer.

* Labor MP Pat Conroy has written to the Australian Federal Police asking seeking an investigation.
