Defence company Thales and explosives giant Orica have signed a 10-year deal to produce explosive boosters at munitions factories in Victoria and NSW.

The components are designed to detonate larger charges used in the mining industry, with five million to be produced each year.

Defence materiel minister Dan Tehan said on Wednesday defence owned the two factories in Benalla and Mulwala but they were operated by Thales which was encouraged to pursue commercial opportunities.
