Terror laws need proper scrutiny: Liberal

A senior Liberal says the government's plan to strip citizenship from terrorism supporters needs more scrutiny.

Former assistant treasurer Arthur Sinodinos says there is still some way to go before the policy is settled.

Senator Sinodinos told Sky News on Wednesday the public consultation process needed to run its course, before legislation was drafted and the parliament's intelligence committee examines the bill in detail.

While enabling a minister to take away citizenship rights was an important "symbolic" signal to send to would-be terrorists, any changes needed to abide by the rule of law, he said.

Senator Sinodinos said he would be reluctant to support any bill that did not include either judicial review of decisions or the involvement of the courts in the first instance.

"The court should always be the preferred course in Australia," Senator Sinodinos said.

Indefinite detention would also be inconsistent with the rule of law.
