Curtis Cheng murder trial: Accused refuses to stand for judge

The Sydney man charged with orchestrating the execution of police accountant Curtis Cheng has been warned he could face more charges after refusing to stand for a Supreme Court judge today.

Raban Alou, 20 did not budge even after he was told by Justice Peter Johnson there was no religious basis for a refusal of that kind, according to the respected Australian National Imams Council.

Alou was in court for a sentence hearing after pleading guilty to aiding, abetting, counselling or procuring Farhad Jabar, 15, to commit a terrorist attack in 2015.

The crown has alleged he supplied the gun which Jabar used to shoot Mr Cheng dead as he was on his way home from work.

After he received the gun at Parramatta Mosque, Jabar was captured on CCTV giving the Islamic State salute.

He then walked the short distance to Parramatta Police Headquarters, where he shot Mr Cheng.

After Jabar was killed in an exchange of gunfire with security officers, police found a bloodied suicide note which read “by the will of Allah I have come today to put terror into your hearts”.

Crown prosecutor Paul McGuire SC told the court today Alou was an extremist who was not sorry for his actions and had poor prospects of rehabilitation.

In support of that, he alleged Alou had threatened firefighters and Corrective Services officers during a blaze lit by other inmates at Goulburn Supermax.

“I’ll get every single one of you on the outside. I’m going to put a bullet in every single one of you,” he allegedly told them.

When he was warned to “pull his head in” Alou allegedly gave the Islamic State salute with his index finger.

In a separate telephone call on Christmas Eve last year he is accused of telling his mother: “I do not regret one single thing…I will not apologise… it will happen again.”
