Scott Morrison lashes out at 'offensive' question over Joe Hockey's axing

Treasurer Scott Morrison has reacted angrily to suggestions he had “shafted” his predecessor Joe Hockey, exchanging a war of words with TODAY Show host Karl Stefanovic.

Speaking with Stefanovic on the program this morning, Mr Morrison rejected the notion he should feel guilty over Mr Hockey’s removal from the government post.  

Mr Hockey is due to deliver his final speech to parliament today, after announcing his resignation in the wake of losing the treasury portfolio in Malcolm Turnbull’s cabinet reshuffle.

After hailing his and Mr Hockey’s lengthy working and personal relationship, Mr Morrison grew agitated when asked whether it “felt bad to shaft him”.

“That’s a ridiculous question Karl, it’s quite offensive actually,” the Treasurer said.

“No I didn’t, if you want to suggest that you can back it up mate.

“I think that’s playing some pretty pathetic politics over what will be a difficult day for Joe.

“He has the support of his colleagues and their best wishes and I don’t think it’s fair for you to suggest anything different.”

Mr Morrison bit back at the host when asked how he slept at night in the wake of Mr Hockey’s axing.

“I sleep well every night mate, how do you sleep?” Mr Morrison said.

The pair’s exchange had earlier become testy when discussing a proposed change to credit card surcharge legislation.

Stefanovic accused Mr Morrison of being “vague” on the policy, which would see business forced to only charge consumers for transaction costs and unable to profit from the surcharge.

“We’re going to legislate so they can’t profiteer off that,” Mr Morrison snapped back.

“There will be a legislated ban on passing on costs you’re not incurring.”
