Ten years' jail for Vic hit-run on ex

A Victorian man has been jailed for 10 years for using a car as a weapon to deliberately run over his ex-girlfriend.

Anthony John Hewison, 25, of Dandenong, appeared for sentencing in the Victorian Supreme Court on Wednesday, where Judge John Dixon described his crime as a cowardly attack.

Hewison was driving a stolen van when he saw his then 16-year-old ex-girlfriend standing on the footpath, with a friend, in a suburban Dandenong street at 2.30am on January 22, 2012.

He mounted the kerb at around 50km/h, hitting the teenager from behind and throwing her around 18 metres into the air.

She landed on the road, suffering a head injury and multiple fractures.

Hewison didn't stop after the collision.

"The manner in which you used the van as a weapon was highly effective for inflicting very substantial injuries instantaneously," Judge Dixon said.

"You gave her no opportunity to avoid the impact.

"She was completely vulnerable to your cowardly attack on her."

The judge also said the crime was "opportunistic rather than planned" and that Hewison had acted out of rage because they had fought earlier.

Hewison had pleaded guilty to a charge of intentionally causing serious injury.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison but will be eligible for parole after seven years.
