Ten people seriously injured in multi-car crash in the NSW Blue Mountains

Ten people have been seriously injured in a "confronting and chaotic" multi-car crash in the NSW Blue Mountains this afternoon.

Paramedics treated the patients for a wide range of injuries after the crash in Wentworth Falls just after 1pm.

"All the crews did an exceptional job in difficult and trying circumstances," NSW Ambulance Inspector Ronald Gavin said.

"On arrival, paramedics began triaging patients and treating them for a wide range of injuries.

"We also had four patients trapped initially, three were freed relatively quickly, however one man was trapped for an extended period."

A man in his 30s and a woman in her 60s were taken to Westmead Hospital, while a child was taken to Westmead Children's Hospital.

A man in his 30s, a woman in her 30s and a man in his 40s were taken to Nepean Hospital.

Another man in his 60s was taken to Liverpool Hospital.

Three other people were assessed on the scene but didn't need hospitalisation.

Motorists were asked to allow extra travel time when driving through the area.
