Pub forced into holiday shutdown after underage teen's death

A pub in southern New South Wales will be forced into a two-week shutdown over the Christmas-New Year period after a 17-year-old's death.

The teenager had been drinking at the Temora Hotel, in the town of the same name, in March.

He had been served 20 schooners of beer and four rum and cokes before he left the bar and drove with a friend to a house party.

Following the party, he drove around town for a couple of hours before being killed in a single-vehicle crash.

Police found intoxication, speed and driver error were contributing factors.

The Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority found that the boy had not been asked for ID despite being at the pub for seven hours, and that he had even been served free drinks by the bar manager.

"There's no going back from such a tragedy caused by the systemic failings that put this young person in harm's way," ILGA chair Philip Crawford said.

"The messages are clear: check the ages of patrons, repeat if necessary, exclude minors from licensed areas, and do not sell alcohol to people showing signs of intoxication no matter how old they are."

The pub has been ordered to shut down for 14 days from December 24.
