A teenager is reportedly in an induced coma following an assault at Victoria's Malmsbury youth justice centre.

Police say they attended the centre about 6.45pm yesterday following what's it believed to be a fight between a number of detainees.

A 17-year-old boy was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition, with the Herald Sun reporting today he was in an induced coma.

A hospital spokeswoman said his condition was serious.
