A heavily-tattooed man whose body washed up on a Queensland island this morning could have been part of an outlaw motorcycle gang, police say.

The body was found by a fisherman and local ranger on South Stradbroke island, about 2km north of the Gold Coast Seaway, about 7.30am.

He was wearing nothing but a pair of cargo pants and covered head to toe in tattoos.

Police have said he may have been in the water for up to five days and only washed up today because of the high tide.

They are conducting fingerprint and DNA tests to learn his identity.

Police have said they are unsure if the man is a member of a bikie gang, but it is an avenue they are investigating.
