Tasmanian Libs set for majority government

A new poll suggests Tasmania's Liberal opposition will narrowly win majority government at the March 15 state election.

The ReachTEL poll, commissioned by the Liberal Party, gives the opposition 48.8 per cent support across the state to Labor's 25.8 and the Greens' 15.3, Tasmanian newspaper The Mercury reports.

A breakdown of the figures across electorates suggests the Liberals will win 14 of the 25 lower house seats to Labor's seven and the Greens' four.

Under Tasmania's unique Hare-Clark system, each electorate delivers five members to the house, giving minor parties a good chance of picking up seats.

The Liberals need to pick up three seats to govern in their own right.

The Greens currently hold a seat in each electorate with the Liberals and Labor holding 10 each.

The ALP has governed for the past four years with Greens support.

But both major parties have ruled out governing with the support of minor parties after the election.

The ReachTEL poll gives the Palmer United Party 4.8 per cent support, meaning it is unlikely to win a seat.
