A Hobart woman struck and killed by a train while out for her daily walk crossed in front of the freight engine without looking, a coroner has found.

Janice Faye McDermott, 62, was walking her dog on June 5, 2014 along a track running parallel to the train line at Claremont.

Footage shows her turning to cross without looking in front of a freight engine, which had moments earlier sounded its horn.

"I am satisfied that the collision was unintended and caused by her inadvertence with respect to the crossing warning and the presence of the train," coroner Olivia McTaggart said in her finding released on Thursday.

Trains stopped travelling that section of suburban track 17 days later.
