Tasmania's police have welcomed news that frontline officers will be provided with video cameras to wear, enabling them to capture footage which can be used as evidence.

The move brings Tasmania in line with other states which are already using the technology, with the Liberal government on Monday committing $3.4 million to the roll out as part of its upcoming budget.

"Body worn video cameras will be good for cops, make law-abiding Tasmanians and the community safer, but (be) extremely bad for crooks or those who choose to assault or obstruct officers," Police Association boss Gavin Cashion said.
