Uber gets green light in Tassie

Ride-sharing service Uber is expected to start operating in Tasmania before the end of 2016 after state parliament gave a green light to the required law changes.

The upper house on Thursday passed amendments meaning that once a regulatory framework is established, the service - which has proven popular in other states - can commence in Tasmania.

"The reforms establish Tasmania at the forefront of the sharing economy and provides the opportunity for jobs, consumer choice, competition and productivity benefits for the community," Infrastructure Minister Rene Hidding said.
