Search for Tas flood bodies to continue

Search crews are yet to find the bodies of two men, missing for more than 10 days after being swept away in Tasmania's devastating floods.

Despite receding water levels, searches by land, air and water have failed to find Trevor Foster, 81, and Peter Watson, 63.

The former was washed away on June 6 while tending stock on his farm at Ouse in central Tasmania.

His wife watched as he was knocked from his feet.

The following day Mr Watson and his wife were in a newspaper delivery van that was inundated with rising flood waters at Evandale near Launceston.

She managed to escape and was rescued by a helicopter, but Mr Watson went missing.

"We understand how important it is to return the missing person to his family, to provide them with some closure, and despite our considerable efforts we have not been successful so far," Tasmanian Police Inspector Matthew McCreadie said in a statement on Friday.

The Ouse River has returned to normal levels but the search for Mr Foster has been difficult because of the amount of debris.

Emergency service crews, who have also been using cadaver dogs in the search, plan to meet on Monday to discuss how it should continue.

The search for Mr Watson will resume on Monday.

Grandmother Mary Kathleen Alford, 75, died in the floods, which took some rivers to their highest levels since 1929.

More than 110 people were rescued from flood waters, roof tops and stranded vehicles across Tasmania's north, with some 260 properties flooded.

The damage bill has been estimated in excess of $100 million.
