Two charged over fire lighting in Tasmania

Two men will face a Tasmanian court after allegedly lighting fires that burnt out of control amid high-risk bushfire conditions.

Emergency crews responded on Saturday to four fires - allegedly lit deliberately - in central Tasmania, which tore through public land and disrupted traffic on the Midland Highway.

Two days later, crews were alerted to a fifth fire nearby.

Police confirmed on Tuesday they had charged a 32-year-old man with five counts of unlawfully setting fire to vegetation.

He is due to face court in February.

In a separate incident, a 62-year-old landowner has been charged after allegedly conducting a burn-off in November that spread to neighbouring properties in Campania.

Fire crews spent "significant" resources containing the fire and continued to monitor hot spots almost a month after it started.

Authorities have warned that hot and dry conditions leading into summer, coupled with warmer-than-average day and night temperatures, mean Tasmania is at high risk of bushfire.
