Telstra to cut nearly 40 Tasmanian jobs

Telstra will cut almost 40 jobs from its Tasmanian operations with the roles to be carried out by overseas workers.

A statement from acting area general manager Stuart Mitchell said 31 positions in Hobart and seven in Launceston will be affected as the telecommunications giant reduces its back-of-house asset management team.

"The proposal is about removing duplication - Telstra already has a number of functions that are performed by partners overseas," Mr Mitchell said.

"One of these partners already performs similar work to the roles we are talking about."

Mr Mitchell said there will be no jobs lost from field maintenance staff and the changes affect less than four per cent of Telstra's total Tasmanian workforce.

"Overall we have over 400 employees in and around (Hobart) that do a wide variety of work including customer service, network design and field services," he added.

Telstra will always maintain a Tasmanian workforce and in June the company met a commitment to offer 100 new roles to local people, Mr Mitchell said.

"We will always have a need for a local staff presence in our stores and field staff to repair and maintain our infrastructure."
