Tassie trafficker to repay cannabis cash

A man who grew cannabis on land neighbouring his father's rural Tasmanian property has been given a suspended jail sentence after pleading guilty to trafficking drugs.

Timothy Andrew Parker, 32, has admitted cultivating at least 87 mature plants in fenced compounds at Railton in the state's north and said he subsequently sold a pound for $2500 between September 2014 and March 2015.

"He thought that growing and selling cannabis was the answer to relieve the severe financial pressures on the family. He intended to use some but the intention was to sell most," Justice David Porter said this week in the Supreme Court when sentencing Parker to serve 35 hours' community service and repay the money he made selling cannabis.
