McCain Foods will spend almost $10 million in northern Tasmania upgrading processing and storage facilities for potatoes.

Almost $8 million will be spent over two years creating storage space for 55,000 tonnes of potato as the spuds await processing to be turned into french fries and other products.

The Smithton plant at Circular Head will also get a new $1.6 million packing line, which will "increase efficiencies" and sustainability, McCain's director John Jackson said, without making mention of any impact on jobs.
