Tasmania on the hunt for workers: budget

Calling all tradies and former residents: Tasmania wants you.

Handing down the state's 2015/16 budget on Thursday, Treasurer Peter Gutwein launched a recruitment drive to attract interstate business and workers.

They would in part help fill the 8000 new jobs the government plans to create over the coming four years through a $315 million package.

"If you want a job, there will be jobs here in Tasmania," Mr Gutwein told reporters.

"If you're somebody that left this state because under the previous Labor government no jobs were here, and you're wearing a high-vis vest somewhere in northern Australia at the moment, Tasmania is back in business (and) we want you back here."

Mr Gutwein said the state is not targeting workers of any particular skill set, but mentioned there will be significant capital works on roads, dams and rail across the state.

"We believe (the jobs) will come from those areas we've got competitive advantage in: agriculture, aquaculture, construction," he said.

The budget includes $8 million for a jobs and business attainment scheme which is targeting export and import industries from mainland Australia.

"In regards to other states, our message is 'look out we're coming for you'," Mr Gutwein said of the scheme which may include payroll tax breaks and grants.
