Tas wilderness logging road reported

Forestry workers have been accused of building an unapproved logging road within a wedge-tailed eagle breeding exclusion zone in Tasmania's Tarkine wilderness.

Conservation groups Save the Tarkine and the Bob Brown Foundation say the road has been built within the past month, including the removal of large trees in a blackwood forest less than a kilometre from a documented nesting area.

"The Wedge Tailed Eagle is known to be highly susceptible to disturbance in the breeding season. With around only 130 breeding pairs remaining, each pair raises only one chick in a season," Save the Tarkine spokesman Scott Jordan said, adding that the matter has been reported to Tasmania's Forest Practices Authority.
