Tas undie runner avoids jail over assault

A Tasmanian man who lost a cricket bet and ran across the Apple Isle in his undies, raising money for charity, has been given a suspended jail sentence for headbutting a man outside a Hobart pub.

Brayden Craig Hayes, 23, was sentenced by the Supreme Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to assault.

His victim suffered a broken tooth in the July incident after being head-butted in the face.

Increasing violence around Hobart's waterfront bars and nightspots prompted Justice Shan Tennent to impose a deterrent sentence of six months' prison, suspended on condition that Hayes be of good behaviour for two years.

"I accept your behaviour on this night was out of character," she said in her written judgment.

"While the nature of your attack could have had disastrous consequences for (your victim), you are fortunate that he appears to have recovered and has no lasting physical effects."

Hayes became a minor celebrity in March when he lost a bet on the Big Bash League cricket and had to run from Hobart to Burnie in his underwear. He used the 320-kilometre, 11-day run to raise $40,000 for charity.

The mayor of Burnie provided the court with a character reference, thanking Mr Hayes for his charity work.
