Plans by the Tasmanian government to pick-up truant school students from the streets and take them to class have sparked an outcry in parliament.

Labor opposition MP Michelle O'Byrne on Thursday said the "reckless" proposal, as outlined in an amendment of the Education Act, went against a core teaching of parents to their children: refusing lifts from strangers.

"We have to combat the very serious issue of truancy," Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff said, adding that he understood the concerns and that consultation on the changes is continuing.
