Rental car companies could be among the businesses flouting Tasmanian law by keeping interstate-registered vehicles on the island for more than the permissible three months.

The Liberal government on Wednesday announced it will crackdown on the law which says vehicles that remain in Tasmania for a continuous period of longer than three months will automatically be deregistered.

"We have received reports that some interstate-based businesses may be deliberately ignoring the law in Tasmania, for commercial gain," Infrastructure Minister Rene Hidding said.
