Tasmania's Cradle Coast will bid to host the 2017 Australian Masters Games.

The chance to host the Masters was a golden opportunity for the area, according to Deputy Premier Jeremy Rockliff.

"The Australian Masters Games has the potential to attract more than 7,000 competitors and a further 3,000 visitors to the 10 day competition and inject about $9 million into the host region's economy," he said.

The state and federal government have committed up to $750,000 each to secure the event.

Both government grants are conditional upon support from the Cradle Coast Authority as well as proof local councils and the community can provide the rest of funds needed.
