A 17-year-old Tasmanian who had been on his P-plates less than three weeks has a date in court for speeding 58km/h above the limit.

Police caught the novice driver, permitted by law to drive no faster than 90km/h, zooming along Bridport Road, Pipers Brook at 148km/h in a ute on Saturday.

His vehicle was clamped and the Launceston teen is now facing disqualification from driving and up to $1500 in fines.

"To see someone so inexperienced choose to drive this way is disappointing given the significant risk that he not only placed himself under, but his passenger and all other road users," Senior Constable Tammi Lambert said.
