Representatives from Hobart's Catholic archdiocese have met with a human rights campaigner to discuss her complaint about an anti-same sex marriage booklet published by the church.

Tasmania's anti-discrimination commissioner Robin Banks on Friday confirmed the parties had met in a conciliation conference and had positive discussions, which will be ongoing and confidential.

"These initial discussions were conducted in good faith, and in a way which was open and respectful of each others views, reflecting the parties' desire for the broader debate," the commissioner said in a brief statement.
