Tas man pleads guilty to lighting fire

A Tasmanian man has pleaded guilty to deliberately lighting scrubland as parts of the state remain on high alert for bushfires.

Christopher Luke Finn, 25, from Wynyard, on Monday faced Burnie Magistrates Court charged with unlawfully setting fire to vegetation.

The fire burnt a patch of land beside a railway bridge at Somerset but did not damage any structures.

Police arrested Finn a short time later after being tipped off by a member of the public.

He pleaded guilty, was refused bail and is due to face the Burnie Supreme Court on October 12, a court spokesman told AAP.

Up to 20 bushfires continue to burn across Tasmania with a total fire ban in place for parts of the state on Tuesday amid forecast heat and high winds.
