Tas health system to be overhauled

The Tasmanian government has tabled plans in parliament to scrap area health organisations in favour of a state-wide "service".

Health Minister Michael Ferguson on Wednesday said the current three-region system is broken, despite record funding.

"By creating a single system, we will deliver better and safer outcomes for patients by reducing wasteful duplication, freeing up funding for services that Tasmanians need, when they need them," he said in a statement.

The Tasmanian Health Service is planned to start in July.
