A volunteer firefighter charged with arson has been suspended from duty pending the outcome of his criminal prosecution in Hobart.

Adam Daniel Patterson, 30, of Primrose Sands, appeared in an after-hours court on Wednesday evening charged with setting alight a shack in his home suburb on May 15.

He was refused bail and is due to face court again on Thursday.

"Given the severity of the charges he has been suspended from duty pending the outcome of the court process," Tasmania Fire Service chief officer Chris Arnol said.
