Tasmania's constitution is a step closer to finally recognising the Aboriginal people as the island state's first people.

The amendments passed the House of Assembly on Thursday, "addressing the missing chapter in Tasmania's history", Premier Will Hodgman said in a statement.

"This amendment to the Constitution brings us up to speed with other states which acknowledge and honour Aboriginal people as the first people and traditional custodians of their lands," he said.

The amendments will be considered by the Legislative Council next week.
