Tasmania's public hospital doctors are calling for the state government to provide pay and working conditions on par with their interstate colleagues.

At a meeting overnight doctors agreed that patient care is being jeopardised by the current situation, while the government pays huge locum fees to staff in regional facilities, Australian Medical Association state president Stuart Day said.

"Tasmanian doctors are the lowest paid and endure some of the worst work conditions in Australia, making it an unattractive option for many young doctors, both to move here or stay here for work," Dr Day said.
